5 Tips for Maximizing the Space Inside a Storage Unit

Blog

When you rent a storage unit, you may think that you have selected the perfect size. But if you are not strategic about packing your storage unit, it can quickly become cramped and disorganized. Use the following tips to help maximize the space in your storage unit:

Place Large Items Along the Walls

If you want to ensure that you maximize the available space in a storage unit, plan on placing large items along the walls. This includes things like large pieces of furniture and mattresses. When you have your large belongings along the walls, you will have ample space in the middle of the unit for smaller belongings and boxes.

Make an Aisle

Don't make the mistake of packing your storage unit full of stuff without creating an aisle for you to be able to walk to the back of the storage unit. If every inch of your storage unit is packed from wall to wall, you won't be able to access specific belongings when needed. Without having an aisle in place, you also will not be able to add new belongings to the storage unit.

Use Furniture for Extra Storage

If you're placing dressers or bookcases in your storage unit, take advantage of their shelves and use them to create extra storage space. Dresser drawers can hold all kinds of things -- just make sure that the drawers are securely taped shut prior to being put in storage so the items inside will be completely secure. A bookcase is a great place to stack small boxes instead of using up floor space inside the unit.

Evaluate the Items Going Into Storage

Before packing your storage unit, carefully examine the belongings that you are putting into storage. If you have items that you really don't want or will never use, consider donating them or throwing them away. There is no reason to take up space inside your storage unit with items that you will never use again.

Use Plastic Storage Bins with Lids

Instead of using large cardboard boxes, consider packing your belongings in heavy-duty plastic storage bins that have lids. These storage containers are stronger than cardboard boxes so you will be able to stack several of them on top of each other, which will help save floor space in the storage unit. In addition, these types of containers will better protect your belongings against pests.
