Four Pitfalls To Avoid When You're Wrapping A Moving Blanket Around A Floor Lamp

Blog

While floor lamps are an essential accessory to many types of living room and bedroom setups, moving them can be quite a hassle. Fortunately, utilizing a thick moving blanket will allow you to place the lamp among boxes and other things in a moving van without too much risk of damage. Just remember to avoid these four pitfalls when you're wrapping a moving blanket around a floor lamp.

Not Removing The Lampshade To Another Box

If your floor lamp has a lampshade that goes on its top, it's important to pack it in a separate box that doesn't have a lot of stuff in it. The moving blanket won't protect the shade from bending if there's a pile of boxes too close to it. The extra bulk added by the shade will also make it more difficult to cover all parts of the lamp.

Keeping The Lamp Upright While You Apply The Blanket

Since most moving blankets are quite heavy relative to normal blankets, it's essential that you head off a risk of a sudden tumble by setting the floor lamp's body on the ground before starting. Before you move the lamp body to the floor, you can set the blanket down on the relevant floor section, saving you a lot of wrapping effort.

During the wrapping process, make sure that no part of the lamp's body goes too high off the floor. Otherwise, a wrong move with a blanket could cause a part of the lamp body to crack.

Placing Too Much Packing Tape Or Rope Near The Light Socket

To prevent damage, it's important that as little pressure gets put on the lamp's fragile light socket as possible. While you'll need either rope or packing tape to ensure the moving blanket stays on your lamp, try to apply it to other parts of the lamp's body. If a center wrap won't effectively bind the blanket by itself, the area right under the lamp's light socket is just fine for attaching rope or tape.

Not Covering The Bottom Of The Lamp With The Blanket

You may be tempted to speed up your wrapping job by not wrapping the blanket all the way around the lamp's bottom. But especially if the moving van is going to be very packed, the risk of a scratch on the lamp's bottom is too large to be ignored. If you're concerned about how the lamp will stay upright with the blanket's material at its bottom, arrange the boxes in the moving van in such a way that the lamp can be packed sideways.
